What is a grom in surfing?

A grom or gremmie, which is short for grommet, is a young surfer that’s about 16 years old or younger.

A grom or gremmie, which is short for grommet, is a young surfer that’s about 16 years old or younger. Some people say grom is used to refer to a new surfer, but I’ve never heard it used in that context. It’s just a kid who surfs. There are plenty of groms who absolutely shred, especially where I live near San Clemente. 

There’s a lot of theories about where the term originated floating around the internet, but I won’t bore you with them. The important thing is groms are child surfers. Though you may also heard kids who skateboard, snowboard, or ski referred to as groms.
